Established in 1970 by wine industry pioneer David Hohnen, Cape Mentelle is one of Margaret River's founding wineries. Cape Mentelle Shiraz is a revelation of the region: a generous and friendly wine, full of fruit, with both power and finesse. Inspired by winemaking techniques from the Rhone Valley and his great love of wines from France, David Hohnen created Cape Mentelle Shiraz in 1983. However, in the early years of Margaret River, other varietals initially took the spotlight. It is now the Queen of varietals in the region. Bold, generous, expressive, this hearty wine has powdery and elegant tannins supporting layers of flavours from dark fruits to smoked charcuterie, finishing with cacao and tobacco notes; coastal influence retains freshness, which allows greater complexity and layering of peppery and spice notes over the dark forest berry and cured meat traditional characters of shiraz; the savoury and umami characters add both to the depth of complexity and rich texture of this wine.
